Crain’s Detroit Business: Facial spa, pastry shop, grocery among 10 semifinalists to vie for $50,000

We’re thrilled to be in the top 10 of Hatch Detroit! Thanks to Kurt Nagl for sharing the story with Crain’s Detroit Business, you can find the full story on their site.

“A demonstration kitchen, art and cocktail venue, luxury clothing retailer and grocery store catering to underserved neighborhoods are among 10 businesses that will face off in the Comerica Hatch Detroit Contest.

Semifinalists for the program announced late Thursday afternoon are competing for $50,000 from Dallas-based Comerica Bank and more than $200,000 in pro bono support from nonprofit Hatch Detroit, according to a news release.

The program, founded in 2011, is produced by the nonprofit in partnership with Comerica and presenting sponsor Bedrock LLC. Since its inception, six winners have been crowned and 33 participants — so-called Hatch alumni — have opened storefronts, according to the program’s website. Among them are Sister Pie, Batch Brewing Co., Detroit Vegan Soul, and Baobab Fare, which won last year’s competition.

The program is open to startup restaurateurs and retailers looking to open in Detroit, Hamtramck or Highland Park. More information and applications for future contests can be found at hatchdetroit.com.

The 10 semifinalists will be pared down to four finalists through a public vote. Anyone can vote for “no more than four contestants up to three times per day” on Hatch Detroit’s website, its Facebook page or select locations in the city. Voting opens Friday and closes midnight Thursday.

The four finalists are to be announced Aug. 17. They will pitch their business plans to a panel of judges and audience Aug. 30, when judges and public voting will determine the winner.”
